William “Bill” Melvin Mattison
May 15, 1944-May 21, 2025
William “Bill” Melvin Mattison (81), a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Navy Veteran, and true frontiersman, passed away peacefully at home in Baudette, MN, on May 21, 2025, surrounded in love with family by his side.
Bill was born to Melvin and Eva (Franny) Mattison on May 15, 1944.  Early settlers of the area, the Mattison family helped shape the foundations of Baudette through ventures like the local fish hatchery, mink farm, commercial fishing, and lumber operations.  The family had a hamburger stand on Curry’s Island for many years.
A 1962 graduate of Baudette High School, Bill made his mark on the football field, remembered fondly for the cheer that echoed through the stands:
“Rickety rackety russ, we’re not allowed to cuss, but nevertheless, we must confess there’s nothing the matter with us. Your quarterback is done, we have Mattison, so hike the ball to start the play, now run, turn, run,” and with that, the legend was born.
Later that year, Bill joined the U.S. Navy, proudly serving aboard the USS Chicago (CG-11) and the USS O’Callahan.  It wasn’t until the Navy that he had his first taste of beef, fitting for a man raised on wild game and northern grit.
After his service, Bill began a pioneering career as a computer technician with Recognition Equipment, Inc., dedicating more than 35 years to the field.  During his first decade on the job, he trained in Houston in six-month intervals, setting a standard in the emerging world of computer technology.
Bill was married for 37 years and raised two sons, Vance and Jeremy.  Later, he welcomed Kerri and Floyd into his life with the same care and pride.  He adored his grandchildren, Aaron, Nick, Amanda, Cali, Quinn, Austin, and Madison, and cherished time with his great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy and laughter.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Eva, infant brother Ronald, sisters Audrey and Karen, and grandson Troy.
Bill leaves behind his children, Vance, Jeremy, Kerri, and Floyd; his grandchildren, Aaron, Nick, Amanda, Cali, Quinn, Austin, and Madison; his great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Bill was a man of enduring spirit, rugged yet tender, independent yet devoted.  His life was one of deep roots, quiet strength, and unshakable love for family and tradition.  He was, in every sense, the last of a rare breed.
A private family gathering will be held to honor his life and legacy.
