Hal Scott Smart, 64

January 20, 2025

Hal Scott Smart, 64, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on January 15, 2025, after a battle with an aggressive and rare form of cancer.
Hal was born at the Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida, on January 20, 1960, to Beverly and Joseph Smart. He graduated high school in 1978 in Boonville, Missouri, and immediately joined the Air Force, where he spent 27 years serving his nation. He had duty stations in Germany, Guam, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, earning 34 medals and numerous citations throughout his career.
He retired to Baudette, MN and worked at Marvin Windows for 17 years before moving to Grand Forks, where he worked at WalMart for five years, finally and fully retiring in 2023.
In 1985, Sherri Larson allowed Hal to marry her and they had three great children, Christopher, Samantha, and Joshua. Hal enjoyed fishing, reading, everything related to airplanes and the history of flight, making people laugh and brightening their days with witty and sometimes smart aleck comments, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wonderful mother, Beverly, and his beloved first child, Christopher. Per his request, although he loved the Air Force, he did not wish a military funeral or a memorial service. His ashes, along with those of Christoper, will be surrendered to God and nature during a private ceremony at a site he has designated.
Prayers are appreciated, and the family welcomes your kind words and support. Messages can be sent to Sherri Smart, 2496 Lawndale Road, Grand Forks, ND 58201. Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks has helped him with his final journey home, which is greatly appreciated by the family.
