Lucinda (Lu) May Hoops, 54

November 11, 2024

Lucinda (Lu) May Hoops was born on May 14, 1970, to Marvin and Ruth (Brumbaugh) Hiemstra in Platte, SD. Lucinda passed away peacefully at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

She attended Platte schools and graduated in the Class of 1988.

Lucinda was no stranger to hard work. She held many positions in her life. Most cherished was the  time spent working for her Mom at Shorty's in Platte. After moving to Baudette, she worked several hospitality positions for local resorts. In 2016 she started working for Hometown Hardware and remained there until health conditions forced her to quit. It's there she met many of the local  people and developed many lasting relationships.

It was Shorty's, her mom's restaurant, where she met Dan in November 1996. A relationship was  born that lasted her lifetime. Dan and Lucinda were married Sept 1 of 2001. One of her fondest  memories was the trip that she and the boys took Pheasant hunting the fall of 2023. She said she finally understood the the thrill watching the boys and the dogs work.

As the kids grew, she enjoyed helping where she could with sports, whether youth wrestling, baseball, or robotics.

She had many hobbies; bowling was among her favorite, and she went to many tournaments and state competitions. Her health made her quit bowling. Crocheting was a great pass time of hers, many of you probably have a blanket or dish towels she made. She also had a knack for cooking, baking, and canning. She recently finished canning well over 100 quarts of vegetables and pickles.

Lu's Greenhouse brought her much joy over the last few years. She got to see many of the people she met in the Hardware store and met many more.

She loved all of her kids and took great pride in who they became. She was devastated when her youngest son, Jacob David, was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) in 2011 and passed in  November of that year. The same disease that took her two brothers, David and Daniel.

Lucinda is survived by her husband Dan, daughter Dannielle (Scott) Schmitt, sons Austin (Julia),  Jaydon and girlfriend Kiara, Hunter and girlfriend Delaney, Father Marvin Hiemstra (Platte, SD), sister Lorie Workmeister (Platte, SD), brother Don Hiemstra (Roanoke, VA), and many more grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her son Jacob David Hoops, her Mother Ruth, her infant sister Carla, her brothers David and Daniel, her father-in-law Albert Hoops, her mother-in-law Elvera Hoops, and several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

Also surviving are her daytime companions, Ella and Finn. As much as she cussed at them, we all  know she loved them.

A special thank you to her care providers: Lake of the Woods Ambulance Staff, LakeWood Health,  Altru Hospital, her countless teams at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and Dr. Lund and his team at the  University of Minnesota.

Services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baudette, MN. Visitation will be from 5- 7 p.m. Sunday, November 17th, at the church, and Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., with visitation starting 1 hour before November 18th.
