Randy Scott Johnson, (Spider)

If you wonder why he’s missing, feel at peace, he’s just gone fishing.

Randy was born September 17, 1955, to Gene Ray and Alice Joyce (Downs) in Wilmar, MN.

Randy was known to many as Spider Johnson. Spider was a very charismatic man with wisdom and wit to match. He wore many hats. One of his first careers happened to be in men’s retail at Ranny’s Men's Center in Willmar, MN. He had a “know-how” when it came to dressing the man professionally for success. So personable and confident, he later started one of the first lawn care services in Willmar. This led him to bigger and better things.

Spider was passionate about fishing, which motivated him to own and operate a liquor and bait shop, the last stop for the fishermen on their way to the lake. He loved fishing, some of his favorite places to fish included Green Lake, Long, Diamond, Red, Lake of the Woods, waters in Canada, and Arizona. He eventually moved North and began his icehouse rental business on Red Lake. He was fortunate to experience the Crappie Craze and in 2006 the harvesting of Walleyes. He went up to Red Lake at West Wind Resort and made it his home base. He truly appreciated all of what West Wind Resort did for him.

Spider Johnson was very compassionate to those who struggled to enjoy the whole fishing experience. Whether it be because of age or impairment, Spider helped them get their limit. Many times he would give a knock to a front door and share his limit in return he would go home with a freshly baked apple pie!

Spider not only loved to fish, but he also had a liking for the sport of bird hunting. His home is filled with the beauty of many of the birds he hunted. He most recently went on several turkey-hunting adventures that took him to Nebraska, Missouri, and Iowa. His trip with Johnny O is one of his favorites.

Spider had one son, Shaun Ray, with his first wife Becky Smith. Shaun gave his dad the best gift ever, his grandson Nevan Ray Theo Johnson. He cherished his grandson more than anything.

In 1991 he met the love of his life, Patty. In 2005 he crossed her path again and this time they moved North together and shared 18 years on the hobby farm in Carp. Always loving, he encouraged her to be herself and enjoy life.

Spider is survived by his wife Patty, brother Rick, his son Shaun, and Grandson Nevan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Alice Joyce, and a sister, Vickie Lee.

A celebration of life will be held on June 30th, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the farm at 5588 13th Ave SW, Baudette. In case of inclement weather, it will be held at the Carp Hall. Lunch will be served.
