Vernon R. Baie, 88
Richland, Washington: Vern was born to Annabelle and Harold Baie in Williams, MN. He was the oldest of four children, which included three sisters, Janyce, Joyce, and Marlyce. Vern was raised in Williams and loved spending time with Grandpa Cook, often recalling memories of when Grandpa lived in the woods.
Vern graduated from Williams High School in 1953 and enlisted in the Air Force shortly after. Vern excelled in the military and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. He married Kathryn Lavalla in July 1960. Together, they had four sons: David, Craig, Vernon II (Rob), and Kelly.
The family moved to Ellensburg, WA, in 1964, where Vern worked at Central Auto Parts. In 1979, the family moved to Pasco, where Vern and Kathy purchased Tri-City Auto Parts. The family transitioned the parts store to an automotive machine shop, which it remained until sold in 2019, although Vern continued to help at the “shop”.
Vern had many interests, including tinkering on vehicles and race cars, hunting, fishing, cutting wood, and playing hockey. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family in “the shop,” especially around his wood stove. Vern made friends quickly and had many in Ellensburg and the Tri-Cities.
He and his only grandson Brennden Baie had a close and special relationship. When Brenn was growing up, they shared many hours together, working on Brenn’s projects.
Vernon passed away on December 13th, 2023, after battling dementia for the last several years.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Kelly, and a sister, Janice.
He is survived by his sisters Joyce and Marlyce, his sons David (Shannon), Craig, and Rob, grandchildren Brennden (Chanda) and Jessica Baie, great grandchildren Kennedy and Harley Baie (Brennden).
A military service was held at Desert Lawn Memorial in Kennewick on December 30th at 1 pm.
